Flavie Villanueva, SVD, along with other priests, and supporters of slain teenager Jerhode ''Jemboy'' Baltazar, help raise Baltazar's casket to an improvised hearse as it leaves the San Lorenzo Ruiz and Companion Martyrs Parish Church in Manila, Philippines on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Fr. Villanueva, who belongs to the Society of the Divine Word, has taken up the cause for victims of alleged extrajudicial killings since the 'War on Drugs' was started by former Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte. Baltazar, a 17-year old who helps fish with his father, was killed by local policemen on August 2, 2023 who were in pursuit of a murder suspect, which Navotas City police chief Allan Umipig later admitted his officers mistook him for the actual suspect-at-large. The six policemen involved have been suspended and disarmed, facing homicide charges.

In a letter dated July 31, 2023, Filipino bishop Honesto Ongtioco of the Diocese of Cubao instructed priests, administrators, and consecrated men and women to hold a ''Diocesan Day of Prayer in Reparation for the Sacrilege Against the Lord'' on the monthly devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on August 4, 2023 after a video of former Drag Den Philippines contestant Pura Luka Vega impersonating Jesus Christ, danced to a remixed version of The Lord's Prayer in Filipino, causing a mostly hostile reaction against the drag queen. Vega has stood for their performance, calling it their own expression of faith.

David, D.D. urged the Catholic faithful to resume their physical attendance of the Mass, while making sure that health protocols are still implemented in churches and venues for liturgical celebration.
