Some Eastern Native American tribes used to call April's full moon the "pink moon" due to its connection with early spring wildflowers. April full moon is also a supermoon, which occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and more radiant than usual.

It was named after the sturgeon fish, which were most readily caught during this month in the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, called perigee. On August 19th and 20th, 2024, the full moon was at a distance that qualifies it as a supermoon, making it a particularly impressive sight. This full moon was also a ''Blue Moon'': a seasonal Blue Moon is the traditional definition of a Blue Moon and refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons according to NASA.
