England today began its second national coronavirus lockdown with pubs, bars, restaurants and non-essential shops all required to close until the currently scheduled end date of December 2. People have meanwhile been told to stay home as much as possible, although schools and other educational institutions are this time being being kept open. The new shutdown was announced by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday, citing fears that covid-19 again threatened to overwhelm the National Health Service (NHS).

Britain began its third week of coronavirus lockdown today, with the measures widely expected to be extended once the initial three-week period of restrictions is up. As the country continues to await its epidemic 'peak', figures released today reveal that a total of 51,608 people have now tested positive for the covid-19 coronavirus in the UK, up 3,802 from yesterday, with 5,373 so far having died. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in London last night with 'persistent symptoms' of the coronavirus, was tonight moved to intensive care after his condition was said to have deteriorated over the course of this afternoon. Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary, is deputising as required.
