Rep. Al Green (D-TX) (front left) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) (front center) lead Representatives down the House steps for a candlelight vigil for Israeli hostages, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 17, 2023. The vigil marks the 103rd day of the war in Gaza. Roughly 130 hostages remain in Gaza after 105 were released at the end of November in exchange for 240 Palestinians. No mention was made during the vigil of the more than 24,000 Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli military action since the Hamas attacks, or the roughly 7,000 Palestinians held by Israel.

This year’s march is a celebration of the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade and the federal right to abortion access on June 24, 2022, in the Dobbs v. JWHO opinion. Roughly half the states have since banned or severely restricted access to abortion. Anti-abortion activists want to go further and called for Congress to pass a national abortion ban.
