Swedish Activist Greta Thunberg Speaks Against The Decried Highway A69 In The Tarn Department

French MP Anne Stambach-Terrenoir is standing before the protest in the woods near Semalens in the Tarn Department, on the planned A69 highway route between Toulouse and Castres. Opponents of this project are organizing a weekend of protest, known as the 'Cabanacade', with Swedish ecological activist Greta Thunberg. The event is taking place near the ZAD, dubbed 'Crem'Arbre', and is a call to activists and sympathizers to build huts for 'Ecureuils' ('squirrels') who are living in the trees to block their cutting. Greta Thunberg is saying that it's insane to maintain such a project which will compromise the quality of life of inhabitants and will destroy not only nature but also agricultural fields. Riot police 'Gendarmerie Mobile' are intervening several times to block the railway between Toulouse and Castres and are using tear gas canisters to intimidate protesters as the protest takes place on private lands. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' wants the building of the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content are given. All expropriations for farmers aren't cleared. Opponents to this project are saying that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without the inflation) for 54 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400ha of agricultural fields will be destroyed. An activist from the 'La Voie Est Libre' association is participating in a protest in the ZAD known as 'Crem'Arbre', located in the woods near Semalens in the Tarn Department, on the planned route of the A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. Opponents of the project, including Swedish ecological activist Greta Thunberg, are currently organizing a weekend of protest called the 'Cabanacade' in Saix, France, on February 10, 2024. They are calling on activists and sympathizers to build huts for 'Ecureuils' (squirrels), who live in the trees, to prevent the trees from being cut down. Thunberg is criticizing the project for its potential to compromise the quality of life of local inhabitants and for the destruction it would cause to nature and agricultural fields. The 'Gendarmerie Mobile' riot police have intervened several times, using tear gas to intimidate protesters, as the protest is taking place on private lands. The 'La Voie est Libre' collective is demanding that construction of the highway be halted until all judicial decisions have been made, noting that not all expropriations for farmers have been resolved. Opponents argue that reprofiling the N126 would be sufficient for the anticipated 6,000 vehicles per day and would be much less costly. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction would result in the destruction of over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land.
