The T1 airport terminal and control tower of Thessaloniki Airport. Passengers boarding a Boeing 737 MAX 8-200 passenger airplane of Ryanair low cost airline carrier at Thessaloniki Makedonia International Airport SKG. The plane is scheduled for a flight to London Stansted Airport STN. The Boeing B738M aircraft has the registration EI-IGV and is powered by 2x CFMI jet engines. Ryanair is an Irish budget carrier with headquarters in Dublin with a fleet of 575 aurcraft and subsidiary airlines Ryanair DAC, Malta Air, Buzz, Lauda Europe and Ryanair UK. Its route network serves over 40 countries in Europe, North Africa (Morocco), and the Middle East and in 2016 became the world's largest airline by scheduled international passengers. The airport is operated by Fraport Greece, which is a German transport company that operates Frankfurt Airport. It was privatized in 2015 to Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture. The construction of the new passenger terminal T2 was completed in 2021. Thessaloniki is a hub for Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Ryanair and serves Thessaloniki city and popular tourism destinations in Northern Greece like Chalkidiki and Central Macedonia. The airport has facilities such as Duty-Free Shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges and it is served by bus and taxi.

Greece is a popular travel destination with famous beaches and a heavily developed tourism industry, with a long tourist season as it is located in the Southern part of Europe in the Mediterranean waters. Greece is trying to boost its tourism and give privileges to vaccinated against the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic to international tourists and locals, as the country is heavily dependent on the tourism industry. The world aviation passenger traffic numbers declined due to the travel restrictions, safety measures such as lockdowns, quarantine, etc during the era of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic that hit hard the aviation and travel industry. Greece spotted the Delta mutation in June and nowadays this Covid variant is the majority in the cases, the country imposed new measures and local lockdowns. The airport is owned by the Greek Government but is operated with long term lease by Fraport Greece, subsidiary of Fraport Aktiengesellschaft AG.
