7 November 2020
People walk beside the River Thames, along the embankment path across from the Houses of Parliament, in London, England, on November 6, 2020. England yesterday began its second national coronavirus lockdown, announced by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson last Saturday, citing fears that covid-19 again threatened to overwhelm the National Health Service (NHS). Pubs, bars, restaurants and non-essential shops are all required to be closed until the currently scheduled end date of December 2. People have meanwhile been asked to stay home as much as possible, although schools and other educational institutions are this time being being kept open and the streets of central London today were markedly busier than the early days of the first lockdown in the spring.

24 March 2020
People walk along a near-deserted path alongside the River Thames, seen from the Millennium Bridge in London, England, on March 24, 2020. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday evening instigated an unprecedented UK 'lockdown' to combat the spread of the covid-19 coronavirus, instructing citizens not to leave their homes other than to buy essentials, for medical reasons and to provide care, to travel to and from work if 'absolutely necessary', and to exercise once a day. All shops selling non-essential goods were ordered to close. A further 87 people were today announced to have died from the coronavirus in the UK, bringing the total to 422.
