Firefighters and policemen from the CNAMO, a specialized unit, are trying to dislodge an 'Ecureuil' living in a tree. The 'Ecureuil' can be seen standing on a branch to the right of the tree, near the red flag. In the woods in Saix, Tarn Departement, on the planned A69 highway route between Toulouse and Castres, opponents of the project have established a ZAD named 'Crem'Arbre' where 'Ecureuils' ('squirrels') are living in the trees to prevent them from being cut down. Gendarmes Mobiles (riot police) have intervened to clear the ZAD of all opponents and are now standing guard near the trees occupied by 'Ecureuils' to block the supply of food and water by sympathizers. The Gendarmes Mobiles have cleared the nearby area of all opponents, and the CNAMO police unit is intervening to dislodge the 'Ecureuils' from their trees. After two days of police efforts, they have only dislodged one 'Ecureuil'. The LDH (Human Rights League) has arrived to provide medical supplies to the 'Ecureuils'. Meanwhile, new trees are being occupied by 'Ecureuils' at a new location called 'Cal'Arbre'. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' ('The Way is Free') wants the construction of the highway to be halted until all judicial decisions on the matter are made. The expropriations for farmers have not been resolved. Opponents argue that the reprofiling of the N126 would be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles expected per day and would cost much less. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction would destroy over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land. This is taking place in Saix, Tarn, France, on February 21, 2024.

20 January 2024

Protesters are holding signs, one of which reads ''No migrants: no healthcare, no public works, no entrepreneurs,'' as several thousand people are demonstrating in Toulouse, France, on January 20, 2023, against the 'Darmamin' law proposed by the French Ministry of Interior. This law aims to drastically limit or even stop state medical aid, social security, and social benefits to refugees or migrants in France. Many are opposing the law for various reasons. University presidents and professors are protesting, arguing that the law contradicts the values of the French Republic and the long-standing tradition of French universities being open to the world. They are concerned that international students will face higher fees than French students and a 'bail of return.' Medical workers are demonstrating against the potential elimination of state medical aid, emphasizing the importance of treating illnesses before they become too severe or expensive to manage. Entrepreneurs are voicing their opposition, citing the need for this workforce in low-paid or seasonal jobs. Teachers are protesting because the law would make knowledge of the French language mandatory, and they argue that there are insufficient resources to teach French to newcomers, including children. The Constitutional Council is preparing to deliver its opinion on the constitutionality of the law on January 25th.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets after the call of NGOs (Amnesty International, Human Rights League), trade unions (CGT, CNT, FO, SAF ie Union of French Lawyers), journalists' unions (SNJ, SNJ-CGT) and political parties for a protest against the so-called 'Global Security Law' bill promoted by French President Macron and his majority. They also called for more means for the hospitals as the 2nd wave of Covid-19 is here. Some Yellow vests also came for the 2nd anniversary of their first protest. A lawyer, Claire Dujardin, holds a flag of the SAF (ie Union of French Lawyers). Several NGOs (Amnesty International, Human Rights League), trade unions (CGT, CNT, CFDT, SAF ie Union of French Lawyers), journalists' unions (SNJ, SNJ-CGT), International and European Journalists Federation, and political parties called for a gathering against the so-called 'Global Security Law' bill promoted by French President Macron and his majority. The gathering finished amid clouds of tear gas launched by riot police. This law intends to give more powers to municipal police and to private security guards, it will give broader powers to police such as connecting to private CCTVs in buildings or shops. Police will be authorized to use drones and facial recognition during protests. But it will also forbid anyone to photograph or film police members if not flouted : transgressors could be condemned up to one year in jail and a €45.000 fine. The planned law bluntly says that the use of cameras by police forces is intented to 'inform the public and the press' because as said by J.-M. Fauvergue (ex chief of the RAID, a Police Tactital Unit) 'French police is losing the images' war'. The French Rights Defender, the French National Commission on Human Rights (administrative bodies) and the UN Human Rights body condemn the planned law saying that it will be a violation of internationals treaties signed and ratified by France, the Universal Human Rights Declaration, general principles of law, etc. They fear a chilling effect on people wanting to use their right to protest, right to personal privacy... and on journalists, photographers, videographers.
