On January 7, 2026, in Mexico City, Mexico, approximately 1,000 dogs are rescued from the Franciscan Shelter, located at kilometer 17.5 of the Mexico-Toluca Highway. The rescue, conducted using cages and vans, leads to a confrontation with shelter advocates who demand information about the animals' health and the number removed from the property in the Cuajimalpa borough. According to official information, the conflict at the shelter begins with a legal dispute over the property between private individuals. However, animal welfare activists report signs of animal abuse at the shelter, including overcrowding and neglect of the animals' health. They urge Mexico City authorities to intervene as soon as possible to transfer the dogs to a sanctuary or safe shelter for evaluation and medical care. The animals from the Franciscan Shelter are transferred to the Veterinary Hospital of Mexico City in Iztapalapa, the Animal Surveillance Brigade in Xochimilco, and the Canine Shelter of the Secretary of the Environment in Ajusco, among others.
