The powerhouse of nutrients — water chestnuts played a significant role during the famine which hit Kashmir a century ago. To avoid being starved, the locals used chestnut flour apart from other dried items.

Local Water Chestnut extractors hand over the daily collected Water Chestnuts to traders at Wular Lake in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir, India on 18 August 2021. As per estimation, Wular Lake alone has an annual production of around 5000 metric tons of water caltrops with Dal Lake contributing nearly 2,000 metric tons alongside other wetlands across Kashmir valley.

The lake contributes more than 60 per cent of the fish production in the Kashmir region as around 5-7 thousand fishermen are earning their livelihood from the lake, published by the Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
