A man drives an electric auto-rickshaw along a road on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on June 14, 2026. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common across South Asia, with countries including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan encouraging cleaner transport to reduce fuel costs, improve air quality, and lower carbon emissions. The transition to electric mobility is considered a key component of efforts to address climate change, as transportation remains a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, helping to reduce pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides that contribute to smog and respiratory illnesses in densely populated urban areas. The shift is also expected to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and support national commitments to achieve long-term climate and clean energy goals.

An employee fills the tank of an auto-rickshaw with petrol at a Hindustan Petroleum (HP) fuel station in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 11, 2026. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges citizens to reduce fuel consumption by using public transport, working from home, reducing overseas travel, and pausing gold purchases, highlighting the economic impact of the conflict involving Iran. India imports nearly 85% of its fuel needs and relies on the Strait of Hormuz for about 50% of its crude imports, 60% of its liquefied natural gas, and almost all of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies. On Sunday, President Donald Trump states that Iran's counterproposal to end the conflict with the United States and Israel is ''TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!'', affecting global oil prices.
