30 January 2026
Sushila Karki, Interim Prime Minister of Nepal, is welcomed by officials as she arrives at the Sahid Smarak in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 30, 2026, to lay a wreath on Martyr's Day. Celebrated every year on Magh 16 (end of January), the country marks it with various programs in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom. The day is observed by remembering the struggling life and devotion of martyrs Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, as well as the contributions of other martyrs to the establishment of democracy in the country. A week-long Martyr's Week is also observed in memory of brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives against the then Rana regime. The Rana rulers back then execute Shukra Raj Shastri in Teku-based Pachali, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Sifal, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasarath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati within a week while demanding independence.

Buses wait at traffic lights in an almost deserted Piccadilly Circus in London, England, on March 17, 2020. It has been suggested that public transport in London could soon be massively scaled back to help stem the tide of covid-19 coronavirus cases. London's streets and squares were noticeably quieter today than just 24 hours ago, albeit not deserted. The emptying-out follows new guidance issued yesterday for people to avoid all non-essential social contact and avoid places such as restaurants and pubs. But the British government has so far not followed the path taken by some other countries to require everyone to remain in their homes.
