The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is a wide-ranging species of wading bird in the heron family, Ardeidae. It breeds in Africa, central and southern Europe and southern and eastern Asia and is rarely seen in open situations. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) notes that the global population trend is downward, largely because of the drainage of wetlands. The Western Palearctic populations migrate between breeding and wintering habitats. These birds inhabit shallow freshwater swamps and marshes. They feed on fish, frogs, reptiles, insects, and crustaceans. They breed during April and June. A purple heron flies out on the swamp OxBow Lake known as 'Chupi Char' after hunting Snakehead Murrel fish in East Burdawan, West Bengal; India on 17/01/2023.
