Young people from the tough neighborhoods of the popular city of Ettadhamen, which is one of the most populated cities in Tunis, took to the streets in an anti-government protest march heading towards the parliament building in Bardo city in Tunis, to protest against the police brutality, and to demand the release of youths arrested by the riot police during nightly violent protests that broke out in Ettadhamen and across several cities in Tunisia, in mid-January during more than a week. Ettadhamen City whose name means “solidarity”, was formed by the waves of internal migration (poor, small farmers and unemployed) that marked Tunisia in the early 1950s. The neighborhood's youth played a central role in the 2011 revolution which overthrew President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Since then, the situation has worsened: precariousness, poverty, increase in cost of living, unemployment, school dropout, drug use, hopelessness, marginalization, public's lack of trust in politicians, political, social and economic crisis, social injustice and a suffering public service. This situation has been aggravated by the lockdowns and curfews imposed by the authorities in bid to contain the spread of COVID-19. Tunisia, January 26, 2021.
