Weeks in advance, local men carry heavy logs up the mountain to prepare a huge cross and the crown for the commemoration. At nightfall, around 9 p.m., brass players from Oberammergau open the ceremony with the chorale ''Die Himmel ruhmen'' (''The heavens praise''). Afterwards, the fires on the Kofel and surrounding mountains are lit, creating a striking spectacle visible from far across the region.
