On 22 March, the cement structures of residential construction projects rise in the historic Sur district of Diyarbakir, a Kurdish-majority city in the southeast of Turkey. Roughly half of Sur's residential and commercial areas were destroyed during and after state military operations against Kurdish militants in 2015 and 2016, following the collapse of peace talks. In the spring of 2019, many of Sur's war-ravaged areas were being rebuilt by private construction companies with close ties to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
