KATOWICE, POLAND – DECEMBER 16: A miner in a ceremonial mining uniform stands guard at the Cross Memorial in front of the Wujek coal mine during a ceremony marking the 44th anniversary of the mine’s pacification, in Katowice, Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, on December 16, 2025. In December 1981, following the imposition of martial law in communist Poland, security forces opened fire on striking miners at the Wujek mine, killing nine workers and injuring many others.
