Locals take part in the Chanesiya Jatra, a midnight procession held as part of the Biska Jatra in Madhyapur Thimi, Nepal, on April 14, 2026. The ritual marks the beginning of the Nepali New Year in the Bikram Sambat calendar (Baisakh 1) and begins late at night, continuing into the early morning hours around 3:00 a.m. Centered around the Balkumari Temple, devotees carry palanquins (khat) of goddess Balkumari and other deities to the Dakshin Barahi Temple and back. Participants carry traditional fire torches (chilaak), illuminating the narrow alleys during the procession, one of the key highlights of the festival.
