On December 3, 2025, vendors at the Jamaica Market in Mexico City, Mexico, make pinatas and sell Christmas trees in anticipation of Christmas and New Year's in the capital. According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), pinatas in Mexico originate in the former San Agustin convent in Acolman, State of Mexico, where the first pinata, as we know it today, is created more than 400 years ago, although with some variations in size and shape. The most classic pinatas are shaped like flowers, boats, and stars, although it is said that the pinata should be star-shaped with seven points. Each point symbolizes one of the seven deadly sins, and the candy or fruit that spills out when broken symbolizes the blessings received by all who participate.
