Toulouse: Madleen's Supporter On Hunger Strike, Other Dislodged By Police During A Gathering
12 June 2025

12 June 2025
Protesters are dislodged from the Capitole place in Toulouse, France, on June 11, 2025. People gather in Toulouse in support of the 'Madleen' flotilla after its illegal boarding by Israeli forces in international waters. Gatherers are pushed by police, who use tear gas canisters and pepper spray. Some members of the crew are still held in jail in Israel. The 'Madleen' aims to break the humanitarian blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza for nearly three months. On board are Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, Reva Viard, and Rima Hassan, an MP at the European Parliament. The ship carries humanitarian aid for Gaza. A man decides to begin a hunger strike until all captives of the 'Madleen' are freed and Israel ceases its blockade. Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the Gaza Strip has been leveled and decimated by Israel: more than 55,000 are killed, and 100,000 are injured. The U.N. estimates that up to 2 million people in the Gaza Strip--or more than 85% of the population--are forced to flee Israel's devastating bombing campaign and that all people in Gaza face starvation. Civilians bear the brunt of Israeli killings.

Toulouse: 'Ecureuils' Try To Slown Down The LGV Project On He Canal Du Lidi

Workers stand near a mutilated plane tree on the riverbanks of the Canal. The Gendarmerie blocks access to one of the rivers of the Canal du Midi to expel 'ecureuils' (i.e., 'squirrels') who occupy trees. 'Ecureuils' occupy the trees to block their cutting for the LGV (high-speed train line) near the ST-Jory lock on the Canal du Midi. Many residents come to support the 'ecureuils' standing in the trees. In one day, CNAMO policemen dislodge only one 'ecureuil'. Zadists (i.e., 'development protesters') begin to install a ZAD (Zone to Defend, a militant occupation intended to physically blockade a development project) along the Canal du Midi (Unesco World Heritage Site). They intend to block the construction of a new high-speed train line between Toulouse and Bordeaux. 'Ecureuils' (i.e., people living in trees nicknamed 'squirrels') already live in some trees near the Canal du Midi. However, there are already two train lines between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The project price tag is EUR14 billion as projected in 2014. The works and the line use more than 6,300 ha of good soils, of which 3,000 ha are forests and 370 ha are wetlands in Toulouse, France, on November 10, 2024.
