People are setting the draft of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 on fire during a protest in Kolkata, India, on March 12, 2024. Various organizations are taking to the streets to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, which the government of India put into action yesterday. The bill, for the first time, allows citizenship on the basis of religion to six communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

Citizens gathered to protest against the new public security law nicknamed "gag law" approved by the conservative Popular Party government, this law includes draft legislation that will set heavy fines for offences such as causing disturbances outside parliament, burning the national flag, insulting the state or taking part in unauthorised or prohibited protests at strategic installations.
