People take part at Shakrain festival in Dhaka on January 14, 2016.Shakrain is known as the kite festival in Bangladesh. Especially southern part of the capital Dhaka (Old Dhaka) celebrates it with its full glory. The idea behind this festival is about new crops and seeking blessing from the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It is celebrated at the last date of the Poush (the 9th month of the Bengali calendar). January 14 or 15 in Gregorian calendar is the day of celebrating this festival. This festival is also known as Poush Sangkranti. Shakrain is one of the most colorful and joyous festival. The event starts from afternoon by flying kites with loud music. Thousands of colorful kites with various shapes and size cover the sky of old Dhaka. Inhabitants of Old Dhaka celebrate Shakrain with much glee. Till sunset these kites are flying higher and higher, kite fight is common, cut down some one’s kite is immense pleasure to the others and there is a competition of cutting each other’s kite. At night, flame of fireworks and Fanush takes the place of kites. Fireworks lit up the sky and the luminosity of flame delight everyone with its excellent beauty. Fanushes are like the glittering stars; spread all over the sky of the city of heritage. It reminds its rich tradition. On the roof top dragon fire or the spitting fire is going on. The whole event is performed on the roof top. Anyone is allowed to join the party even if the person is unknown. People of New Dhaka and foreigners also gather at Old Dhaka to observe the day. Everybody is accepted cordially. This festival is symbol of love and friendship. Though it is a festival of the Hindus, in Bangladesh, it is more or less celebrated by the people of all religions.
