Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a Portuguese Presidential Election Candidate, crosses paths with campaign members from one of his main opponents as he visits street markets in Gondomar and Vila Nova de Gaia (Afurada) in Portugal, on January 15, 2026, as the official campaign for the presidency is underway. Henrique Gouveia e Melo, 65, is the former Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Navy. He gains wide recognition after leading the successful Task Force for the national COVID-19 vaccination plan, which leads him to be awarded the Military Order of Christ by the current ruling president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
