A visitor walks on the ruins of the Moragahakanda Reservoir on September 2, 2023, in Moragahakanda, Sri Lanka. The Moragahakanda Project, which started work on January 25, 2007, is one of the largest irrigation projects built in Sri Lanka. The amount spent on this project is 4,500 lakh US dollars. In addition, the total water capacity of this reservoir is 570 million cubic liters. This project will be used for drinking water supply, power generation, drinking water supply, and freshwater fisheries. Due to the drought that has affected Sri Lanka at present, reservoirs have dried up in many parts of the country. Due to this, the farmers as well as the people are suffering from a lack of drinking water. Some water sources have completely dried up, and some water sources can only see a limited amount of water. With the emptying of some reservoirs, the ruins of the villages that were submerged in water for these reservoirs have emerged. People have started gathering in these areas to witness this event. Here, it is special to be able to see houses, schools, and religious shrines submerged in water for these projects. Also, due to the lack of water in these reservoirs, freshwater fish resources are also threatened with extinction. Although Sri Lanka receives a little rain from time to time, it has not yet rained enough to fill the reservoirs.
