11 December 2025

Opponents place an installation reading 'To defend a fundamental right: Code of the environment' in front of the Administrative Court of Appeal of Toulouse. A final hearing on the legality of the environmental authorizations for the planned highway A69 between Toulouse and Castres takes place in the Administrative Court of Appeal of Toulouse. Plaintiffs against the A69 ask the court to nullify all environmental authorizations given for the A69 project. Opponents gather in front of the Administrative Court of Appeal during the hearings. They argue that this highway is not legally sound, that NGE/Atosca (builders) do not respect even their own documents about ecological compensations, violence against opponents, non-compliance with regulations, etc. NGE/Atosca and the Minister of Ecology plead that this highway is 'necessary by nature' and that the first decision of the Administrative Court to scrap the authorizations is an 'anomaly'. The verdict will be given on December 30, 2025. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free') wants the building of the highway to be stopped until all judicial decisions on the content are given. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 54 kilometers. In Toulouse, France, on December 11, 2025.

A member of LVEL, Geoffroy Tarroux, speaks during the press conference near the arborist and activist Thomas Brail (right). A press conference takes place in Toulouse, France, on February 27, 2025, as plaintiffs (LVEL, Attac, Amis de la Terre, D'Ingrando, etc.) against the planned highway A69 between Toulouse and Castres win an 'administrative' trial on the content in front of the judges of the Administrative Court of Toulouse against the French State along with the builder, NGE, and its concessionary Atosca. Judges revoke the environmental authorization to build the A69 highway, thus stopping all works. In December, surprising everyone, the judges decide to reopen the files instead of giving the court decision on the content. Alice Terrasse, the main lawyer for 'La Voie Est Libre' (opponents), pleads, among other things, that the main reason for building this highway: a 'Major Interest Imperative for public interest' is invalid, as did before the 'Rapporteur Public'. The 'Rapporteur Public' sticks to her position that all environmental authorizations be nullified, taking down the ''Major Interest Imperative for Public Interest.'' The court's decision stops the building of the A69 highway. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free'), opponents want the building of the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content are given. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. 20 September 2024

In Verfeil, France, on September 19, 2024, a gendarme from the CNAMO (left) tries to convince an 'Ecureuil' (right) to give up, without success. For the fourth day, the Gendarmerie and CNAMO try to dislodge 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'Squirrels') from the trees they occupy at the 'Verger' ZAD (Zone to Defend). The 'Verger' ZAD is situated on the planned and disputed A69 highway project. As the Gendarmerie and CNAMO intervene, NGE/Atosca begins the destruction of the house and the cutting of all the trees. The CNAMO is a specialized unit of gendarmes to unlock protesters. 'Ecureuils' (i.e., 'squirrels') live in the trees of the 'Verger' ZAD. On this day, gendarmes of the CNAMO catch only one squirrel. Atosca cuts the tree immediately. They try without success to catch the other 'Ecureuils' and mutilate Zineb, an old walnut tree, to catch two 'Ecureuils'. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free') wants the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions on the content are given. All expropriations for farmers are not cleared. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 53 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural fields will be destroyed.

17 September 2024

The excavator wants to tear a tree down even if squirrels stand in the tree right above. After months of negotiations and pressures from NGE/Atosca, and two attacks by incendiaries, Alexandra, the tenant of the 'Verger,' decides to quit her house after concluding an arrangement with ATOSCA. Alexandra thanks every zadiste (development protester) who stays there until her departure, calling them 'heroes.' Immediately, Atosca begins the destruction work of the house and the cutting of all the trees. Zadistes try to resist the Gendarmerie in the house without success. Squirrels live in the trees of the 'Verger' ZAD (Zone to Defend). The driver of the excavator is admonished by the Gendarmerie for his dangerous behavior with the excavator, putting human lives in danger. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' (The Way is Free) wants the highway project to be stopped until all judicial decisions on the content are given. This takes place in Verfeil, France, on September 16, 2024.

People are welcoming a cyclist arriving from Castres. The placard on the right is reading 'Elected people against the A69'. Several thousand people are demonstrating in the streets of Toulouse against the controversial A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. Political parties, unions, and NGOs, including La Voie est Libre, GNSA, CGT, Sud, Greenpeace, XR, LFI, NPA, Amis de la Terre, and FSU, have called for this day of protest. Several MPs from La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) are participating in the protest, along with elected officials from towns along the planned A69 highway route. Before the march began, dozens of cyclists arrived from Castres on their bicycles. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (meaning 'The Way is Free'), along with other opponents, wants the construction of the highway to be halted until all judicial decisions regarding the project are made. Not all expropriations for farmers have been resolved. Opponents of the project argue that reprofiling the N126 would be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles expected per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land are at risk of destruction. In Toulouse, France, on April 21, 2024.

25 March 2024

A man is taking a picture of a tear gas canister launched by riot police in the Crem'Arbre woods. After 37 days in the trees, the last three 'Ecureuils' (squirrels) living in the trees of the Crem'Arbre ZAD (Zone To Defend) are climbing down as the French Justice has recognized that the Crem'Arbre must be protected and the trees should not be cut until September 1st. People, sympathizers, and LVEL members are coming to welcome the 'Ecureuils' on the ground. Riot police are present but only to avoid public disorder. The 'Ecureuils' and their trees have been besieged by police for more than a month. In Saix, Tarn, France, on the planned A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres, opponents have installed a ZAD dubbed 'Crem'Arbre' and 'Ecureuils' are living in the trees to block their cutting. The main collective 'La Voie est Libre' (The Way is Free) wants the highway to be stopped until all the justice decisions are given. All expropriations for farmers aren't cleared. Opponents of this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 would be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 53 kilometers. More than 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural fields will be destroyed. This is happening in Saix, Tarn, France, on March 24, 2024.
