Kashmiri men sit along a stream as water flows through a lush green landscape beneath the foothills of the Himalayas on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 16, 2026. Glaciers across the Kashmir Himalayas have shrunk rapidly over the past several decades due to rising temperatures, reduced snowfall, and changing weather patterns, which accelerate ice loss in the region. Recent scientific studies indicate that some glaciers, including the Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg, have lost nearly 88 percent of their ice volume, while broader research suggests Kashmir has lost nearly 25-30 percent of its glaciers over the last six decades. Climate experts and international reports warn that the rapid retreat of Himalayan glaciers threatens rivers, agriculture, ecosystems, and water supplies for millions across South Asia.

Lower Antelope Canyon, a V-shaped slot canyon near Page, Arizona, is known for its vibrant colors and narrow passages, accessible only through guided tours by authorized Navajo companies. The canyon, located on Navajo Tribal Land, was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding. Rainwater collects in the basin above the canyon, gaining speed and sand as it flows into the narrow passageways, eroding and deepening the corridors over time.

The Teesta River flows through North Bengal near the strategic Siliguri Corridor, also known as the ''Chicken's Neck,'' which connects India with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The river, particularly around Sevoke and Kalimpong, has experienced severe damage from Himalayan flash floods, resulting in human suffering and infrastructure loss. In 2023, a glacial lake outburst flood in North Sikkim left thousands homeless and caused numerous casualties. In certain areas along the river, people have constructed bamboo dwellings. Recent Chinese involvement in a Teesta River project in Bangladesh has raised security concerns for India. The Border Roads Organisation and NHIDCL continue to work in regions adjacent to the Teesta River to ensure the road remains undamaged by future floods and nearby settlements are safeguarded. They are also fortifying NH-10, a vital highway within the Siliguri Corridor, to enhance its resilience in Siliguri, West Bengal, India, on April 19, 2026.
