In the province of Jujuy, in northern Argentina, one of the most important carnivals in the Andean region takes place. Thousands of people flock to the Humahuaca Gorge to participate in the festivities and the traditional ''Descent of the Devils in Uquia,'' where they descend from the sacred mountain to celebrate and dance with the people. Offerings are made to Pachamama (Mother Earth), giving thanks and asking for blessings for the crops, and the ''Unearthing of the Devil'' occurs, in which he appears to entertain the locals according to local belief. Celebrations, snowball fights, and paint fill the Argentine highlands until the ritual of the ''Burial of the Devil,'' which marks the end of the festivities until the following year.
