In Gulmarg, India, on January 20, 2024, Firdous Ahmad, a receptionist, is checking a log book at the Shah Resort 11 Hotel, located about 55 km from Srinagar. The prolonged dry spell this winter in the Kashmir valley has severely affected the famed ski resort of Gulmarg. The ski slopes, which are usually bustling, are now snowless, causing disappointment among tourists and ski enthusiasts. The lack of seasonal snowfall has led to the cancellation of many bookings for hotel owners, significantly impacting their businesses. This unexpected setback highlights the vulnerability of winter-dependent economies and the pressing need for strategies to address the effects of unpredictable weather patterns.
