An aerial view shows sand and rock mining areas located on the Merapi volcano slope in Srumbung sub-district, Magelang, Central Java, on December 17, 2025. The mining location is in a disaster-prone area, which endangers safety and damages the environment within the Mount Merapi national park area. This raises concerns about disasters threatening the villages below if there is a cold lava flow or hot clouds during an eruption because there is no longer any vegetation acting as a natural barrier. However, economic pressures encourage workers to continue these activities.

Kashmiri boatmen extract sand from the River Jhelum in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on December 12, 2025. A severe rainfall deficit of nearly 90 percent since November 5 causes major rivers and streams in the region to reach alarmingly low levels, with some springs drying up. In Katowice, Poland, on December 12, 2025, Krzysztof Labadz of WZZ August '80 and Karol Granatyr, Chairman of the National Commission of the WZZ 'August 80' Coal Mine, participate in a miners' protest in front of the Ministry of Energy. The protest responds to the deteriorating financial condition of Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa (JSW). The National Commission of the WZZ 'August 80' organizes the protest to address the actions of JSW. The miners raise concerns about the reduction in the payment of the Miner's Day allowance and the risk of further cuts in employee benefits. They state that JSW is in a difficult situation and its current actions are delayed and do not solve the problem. The protesters meet with Undersecretary of State Marian Zmarzly, who receives their list of demands. The Senate approves the government's proposed amendment to the Mining Act, which allows for the gradual phasing out of mines extracting hard coal other than coking coal, as well as protective aid and severance payments. The act has not yet been signed by the president.
