Passengers purchase tickets at Italo and Trenitalia self-service vending machines at Roma Termini railway station in Rome, Italy, on April 8, 2026. An advertisement on the Italo machine promotes fares from EUR29.90 to Milan. The scene highlights the competition between Italy's two main rail operators in the liberalized high-speed market. Since Italo (NTV) began service in 2012, competition with state-owned Trenitalia has led to reduced fares and increased frequency on key routes, particularly between Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin.
