Riot police stand in a charging position during clashes with demonstrators as several thousand demonstrators gathered at Place de la Concorde, opposite the National Assembly, in Paris on March 16, 2023 to protest against the pension reform and the use of article 49-3 of the constitution by the government to force its way through without a vote of the deputies. In the early evening tension rose and clashes between demonstrators and police took place. The French government has presented a contested pension reform bill that would raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and the number of years worked from 42 to 43.
