Lycid beetles, also known as net-winged beetles (Lycidae), are seen flapping their wings during rain in a forest near Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on July 14, 2025. These beetles, typically orange and black in color, are toxic and serve as a warning to predators. They are found on flowers and foliage after rain and inhabit diverse ecoregions, including the Nearctic, Palearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Australian regions. Some adults feed on nectar, while others do not feed during their short adult life spans.

Lorenzo Valdes, local producer of Cempasuchil Flowers in the Tlahuac mayor's office in the southern end of Mexico City, prior to cutting said flowers for sale on the eve of the Day of the Dead in Mexico. With machete in hand, he carefully cuts the Cempasuchil Flowers from each zurco and verifies that they are free of predatory insects such as the mayate or beetle, better known in Mexico as jicotillo. Each bunch has an average cost of $20 Mexican pesos (approximately $1).
