Canna indica is a plant species native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the West Indies. It is also known as African arrowroot, Indian shot, edible canna, purple arrowroot, and Sierra Leone arrowroot, and belongs to the family Cannaceae. The plant has naturalized in many tropical regions and is difficult to remove. It is also naturalized in the southeastern United States (Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and South Carolina), and much of Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The flowers are hermaphroditic. It has been a minor food crop cultivated by indigenous peoples of the Americas for thousands of years. The largest flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. Canna indica has been included in the Global Invasive Species Database and has been declared invasive in several places. This photo was taken in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on April 18, 2024.
