A shopkeeper waits for customers next to mannequins decorated with headscarves at a local market in Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 13, 2026. Global markets are affected after the United States orders a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, increasing tensions in the Middle East and causing a new energy shock. In India, a major oil importer, this development is expected to increase fuel costs, strain the rupee, and raise inflation concerns, while also intensifying the focus on energy security and renewable energy sources.
