A roasted turkey is being shared on the platform of the railway station in Izium, Kharkiv Region, northeastern Ukraine, on November 24, 2023. The autonomous Food Train, built and maintained by the Ukrainian Railways and financed by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, is on its maiden voyage from Kyiv to Kharkiv and Izium. On its first trip, the train is delivering Thanksgiving meals to local residents and Ukrainian emergency workers, paramedics, and police officers working in the region. The train, consisting of six carriages, is equipped with a generator car, a refrigerator car, a cold kitchen car, a hot kitchen car, a crew car with a shower and a washing machine, and a luggage car with a 27,000-liter water reservoir, a filtration station, and a pumping station. The Food Train can operate autonomously using its generators and water supply for up to 7 days and is capable of delivering 10,000 hot meals per day to the regions of Ukraine that have sustained serious damage to logistic and power networks across de-occupied territories.
