Tak Bai is the site of an incident that results in the death of 85 Muslim men by Thai police forces in 2004. The statute of limitations in these cases expires on October 25, 2024, without any presentation of the accused officials involved in court. The three provinces in Thailand's Deep South, comprised of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, are under martial law for 20 years due to an ongoing conflict related to the Tak Bai Incident.
