EDMONTON, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 29, 2023: 27% of Canadians reported buying fewer back-to-school supplies for their children this year due to inflation, on September 29, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Canada's downtowns, vital for economic growth and social vitality, are in crisis due to the pandemic, economic shifts, changing work patterns, opioid crisis, mental health issues, and homelessness. Edmonton, for example, faces a rising office vacancy rate post-pandemic, leading building owners and managers to collaborate with community groups on drug, homelessness, and crime issues. Solving these complex challenges requires a whole-of-society approach, involving the private sector, civil society, and all levels of government, with the need for creative, multi-stakeholder solutions to secure our cities' futures.
