Chicken curry, also known as curried chicken or chicken kasha, is a South Asian dish that originated in India. It is popular throughout the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia, Great Britain, and Kenya. This dish is a spicy, delicious, and soupy chicken curry with potatoes, flavored with aromatic whole spices. It is a Sunday special Bengali recipe that is best enjoyed with piping hot rice and a squeeze of lime. In Bengali, 'murgi' means chicken and 'jhol' refers to a soupy curry. Traditionally, Bengali curries included large pieces of potatoes, which absorb the rich flavors of the curry, making it juicy and irresistibly delicious. The curry typically consists of chicken stewed in an onion- and tomato-based sauce, flavored with ginger, garlic, tomato puree, chili peppers, and a variety of spices, including turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cardamom. Outside of South Asia, chicken curry is often prepared using a pre-made spice mixture known as curry powder. The dish described here is specifically from Tehatta, West Bengal, India, as of June 8, 2024.

Tamil Hindu priests squeeze oranges as they bathe the idol of Lord Murugan with orange juice as part of a special abhishekam honouring Lord Murugan during the Sooran Por Festival at a Tamil Hindu temple in Ontario, Canada, on November 13, 2018. An abhishekam (abhiseka, abhisheka) is conducted by priests by pouring libations over the deity being worshipped as mantras are chanted. Usually, offerings such as milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, panchamrita, sesame oil, rose water, sandalwood paste may be poured among other offerings depending on the type of abhishekam being performed. Sooran Por (also called as Sooran Poor, Sooran Porr, Soorasamharam, Surasamharam) is the re-enactment of the Battle of Lord Murugan and Soorapathman. According to legend, Lord Murugan defeated the demon Soorapathman (Sooran) and his army with the sacred Vel (lance) given to him by his mother. Lord Murugan fought for six days, and on the last day he liberated the Devas (Gods) from Asuras (demons). Sooran Por is held to celebrate the victory on the sixth day at dusk.
