Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova speaks at a press conference on a bipartisan resolution condemning Russia for kidnapping Ukrainian children. Russia has taken thousands of children from their parents since teh war began. Some children have been adopted by Russians while others have been sent for “re-education,” to erase their Ukrainian identity, operations that led the International Criminal Court to charge Vladimir Putin with war crimes in late 2022. Noah Orona, 10, a wounded survivor of the Uvalde massacre, chants with the crowd of hundreds against gun violence and assault weapons at teh US Capitol. Demonstrators - including other families and survivors of the Uvalde and Highland Park shootings - are demanding a ban on assault weapons and universal background checks for gun purchases. Both of these measures are favored by large majorities of Americans but were excluded from the recent gun legislation. The rally takes place on the heels of yet another high-fatality mass shooting, this time at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, IL.

A military honor guard places the remains of Harry Reid in teh waiting hearse for departure from the Capitol, after lying in state in the rotunda. A Capitol Police honor guard salutes on the east front center steps. Reid was a Nevada Democrat who served in the House of Representatives from 1983-1987. He was a Senator from 1987-2017, and alternately served as Senate Majority and Minority Leader from 2005-2017.

The flag on the east front of the US Capitol flies at half-staff in honor of former Senator Harry Reid, as he lies in state in teh rotunda. Reid was a Nevada Democrat who served in the House of Representatives from 1983-1987. He was a Senator from 1987-2017, and alternately served as Senate Majority and Minority leader from 2005-2017.
