A monument dedicated to the victims of French nuclear weapons tests is seen in Papeete, French Polynesia, on May 7, 2026. Between 1966 and 1996, France conducted 193 nuclear tests in what was then the Overseas Territory of French Polynesia. Forty-six tests were carried out in the atmosphere, resulting in radioactive clouds that exposed people, fauna, and flora to elevated levels of irradiation. Efforts for compensation and reparations to the affected individuals continue.
