Bags of salt collected from the salt evaporation ponds located in the town of Maras near Cusco Peru in the Sacred Valley of the Incas on July 14, 2014. The bags weigh 50 kilos each. These ponds have been in use since the days of the Inca. Salt is obtained by evaporating salty water from a subterranean stream. The flow is directed by a system of tiny channels constructed so the water gradually flows down onto several hundred ancient terraced ponds. As water evaporates in the arid Andean air the salt precipitates as white crystals on the ponds walls and floor. Photo by Tom O’Neill
