Tuberculosis is among the world's most infectious killers that affects more than 12 million people globally with 2 million deaths annually. India too is the worst hit with three million people infected with TB and adds an estimated 99,000 drug-resistant TB cases every year, treatment has been a worry with a tiny fraction of those infected in India receive the proper drugs even with government-funded program. The government-run tuberculosis treatment programs in India have been hit by the regulation of the sale of drugs that fight the disease are responsible for the spiraling number of drug-resistant cases that are difficult to treat. The World Health Organization has put India in the list of high-burdened countries contributing 80 percent of the world's TB problem. 24 March is recognized as World Tuberculosis Day.
