Members of La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) are holding a banner that reads 'Stop to big useless projects'. Several thousand people are demonstrating in the streets of Toulouse, France, on April 21, 2024, against the controversial A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres. Political parties, unions, and NGOs, including La Voie est Libre, GNSA, CGT, Sud, Greenpeace, XR, LFI, NPA, Amis de la Terre, and FSU, have called for this day of protest. Several MPs from La France Insoumise, as well as elected officials from towns along the planned A69 route, are participating in the protest. Before the march began, dozens of cyclists arrived from Castres on their bicycles. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' and other opponents are demanding that construction of the highway be halted until all judicial decisions regarding the project are made. Expropriations for farmers have not yet been resolved. Opponents argue that reprofiling the N126 would be sufficient for the 6,000 vehicles expected per day and would cost significantly less. The A69 highway is projected to cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros, excluding inflation) for 54 kilometers, and its construction would destroy over 100 protected species and 400 hectares of agricultural land.

Opponents carry a banner reading 'Stop useless, costly, harmful highway'. The collective 'La Voie Est Libre' (ie 'The Way Is Free') and the farmers organization Confederation Paysanne 81 organized in Soual (Tarn) an action to slow down work on the decried future highway Toulouse-Castres, the A69. They also wanted to protect a farmer in Soual from preventive archeological works due to begin this day against his will. They took all points of reference and all the 'nature' placards put by NGE on the site. They acted as NGE group (poised to build this highway) hasn't all the environmental authorizations to begin the works. Preventive archeological works normally begin after all authorizations have been given. This highway would cost (at date) €512millions for 54 kilometers, half of the money will be public. Opponents at this project say that the reprofiling of the N126 will be suffisant for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. More than 100 protected species and 400ha of agricultural field would be destroyed if the A69 highway is built. Soual. Tarn. France. Spetember 26th 2022.
