Monk parakeets are seen in Trani, Puglia, Italy, on September 1st, 2023. Monk parakeet is a type of domestic parrot among the most popular, famous for its extraordinary ability to mimic human language. As a result of clandestine releases or escapes from domestic cages, the species has literally invaded some areas of Italy (such as Puglia and the city of Rome) and Europe (for example, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain). They are therefore an introduced species. They pose a threat to agriculture and pedestrians as they build nests that can weigh up to 150 kg on trees that often do not have the capacity to support their weight. Several organizations and associations have been activated to combat the phenomenon, especially those that protect farmers.
