Cigarette butts cause significant pollution in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, releasing toxic substances such as nicotine, arsenic, and lead into the environment, and can contaminate up to 1,000 liters of freshwater. To combat this problem, a law prohibiting the disposal of cigarette butts in public spaces is in place since 2020, with fines and other penalties for those who violate it.
