''Opposition Is Not A Crime'' Protest Against Tunisia's Growing Crackdown In Tunis
6 December 2025

6 December 2025
Demonstrators light flares while raising large banners featuring portraits of imprisoned prominent opposition figures, including Ahmed Nejib Chebbi and Ayachi Hammami, during a mass march that brings together thousands of supporters of opposition parties across the political spectrum, human rights and civil society activists, and ordinary Tunisians, in Tunis, Tunisia, on December 6, 2025, to protest under the banner ''Opposition Is Not A Crime.'' They decry what they call a growing crackdown on President Kais Saied's critics and opposition parties, as well as on civil liberties, individual rights, freedom of expression, and press freedom. Participants denounce what they describe as an increasingly authoritarian and dictatorial one-man rule by the Tunisian president. The crowd expresses solidarity with opposition figures imprisoned in connection with the case known as the ''conspiracy against state security,'' demanding their release. Under President Kais Saied's rule since 2021, Tunisia sees the dissolution of parliament, the dismissal of the government, the adoption of a new constitution, the dismissal of dozens of judges, the arrest of political opponents, critics, and journalists, while the activities of dozens of organizations are suspended.

Protesters light flares during a mass rally organized under the slogan ''March Against Injustice'' in Tunis, Tunisia, on November 22, 2025. The support committee for imprisoned former judge and lawyer Ahmed Souab organizes the protest to denounce President Kais Saied's policies. The demonstration brings together opposition political parties from across the spectrum, along with Gen Z activists, human rights groups, and civil society members dressed in black, to denounce what participants describe as President Saied's authoritarian and repressive rule. The Tunisian opposition, joined by local and international human rights groups, demands the release of political prisoners and condemns what they view as an assault on democracy, citing the erosion of institutions through an escalating crackdown on dissent, judicial independence, press freedom, and human rights. They warn that Saied's rule drives a broader democratic backslide.

Railworkers hold flares and a banner reading 'Money for our pensions, not for war, angry railworkers'. For May Day or Labour Day, thousands of people take to the streets in Toulouse, France, on May 1, 2025. Trade unionists, people, yellow vests, anarchists, and members of political parties come to the demonstration. This year, people are worried about what French President Emmanuel Macron will do regarding defense and social issues, as he, like other Western leaders, wants to push for defense spending. The French government says French people will be asked to make efforts on the French social model to pay for defense. Antiracism, antifascism, and the Gaza war are also mottos of the march.

Demonstrators light smoke flares, while others hold up a giant banner bearing the effigy of Tunisian President Kais Saied that reads ''Tyrant'' during a protest on the occasion of the 14th Anniversary of the flight of former Tunisian President and dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. This protest follows the call for demonstrations issued by the Tunisian Network for Rights and Freedoms in Tunis, Tunisia, on January 14, 2025, to call for the preservation of the gains of the Tunisian Revolution. They also protest against what they describe as the authoritarian drift of Tunisia's President Kais Saied, as well as against the assault on democracy, freedoms, and rights by the authorities. Following a popular uprising in Tunisia between December 2010 and January 2011, which the authorities brutally repressed, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali is forced to flee the country on January 14, 2011. This date becomes the official commemoration of the Tunisian Revolution, called Revolution Day, which marks the start of the 'Arab Spring' and leads to major political changes in Tunisia. In 2021, the current president, Kais Saied, changes the date for commemorating the Revolution from January 14 to December 17.
