The Chapultepec Zoo was founded by the Mexican biologist and scientist Alfonso Luis Herrera. When it opened, the zoo had a collection of 243 animals. Currently it has 1,236 specimens of 222 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as a butterfly garden, a herpetarium and a museum dedicated to the salamander, a species endemic to Mexico.
