The Devil Of Tufara

Two boys representing the mask of death are applying makeup in Tufara, Italy, on February 13, 2024. Shrove Tuesday is being celebrated according to tradition in Tufara, a small village in Molise. The Tufara carnival is renowned for its central figure, the Devil, a man who dons a papier-mache mask with a long tongue and a costume made of goat skins. The Devil of Tufara emerges at the start of the festivities, screaming, running, and writhing to frighten the spectators.
