Hindu Cleansing Ceremony In Jakarta
Indonesian Hindus are walking through a slum area during a cleansing ceremony called 'Melasti' on a beach in Cilincing, Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 3, 2024. They believe that performing the Melasti ritual is essential ahead of Nyepi Day, The Day of Silence, to purify the soul and nature, recharge the supernatural power of the temples' sacred objects, and cleanse the temple paraphernalia. Nyepi Day is a national holiday in Indonesia, dedicated to self-reflection and abstaining from distractions such as entertainment. In 2024, according to the Indonesian Hindu calendar, Nyepi officially falls on Monday, March 11, following the new moon. The observance lasts for 24 hours, starting at 6 AM and continuing until 6 AM on March 12. (Photo by Afriadi Hikmal/NurPhoto)
