The Story Of A Female Cremator (Dom) Baruipur, West Bengal
Tumpa Das, age 29, walks before the cremation of a dead body in a furnace in a crematorium at Baruipur Panchayat area in South 24-Pargana district of Purandarpur Mahashamshan, about 39 km south from Kolkata, India, on November 20, 2024. For the last 10 years, after her father's death, she is in charge of the crematorium. This woman Dom single-handedly handles the work, which is traditionally male-dominated. From registering the names of the dead to managing the cremation, the work of the furnace is handled by this young woman single-handedly. (Photo by Rupak De Chowdhuri/NurPhoto)
